Apr 12 Paramount On Screen: The Big Lebowski [R] |
Don your best bowling shirt or other Big Lebowski gear for the costume contest that begins at 8:00PM before the movie! The movie will begin around 8:20PM.
From the Academy Award®-winning Coen Brothers comes The Big Lebowski – the hilariously quirky comedy-thriller about bowling, avant-garde art, nihilistic Austrians, and a guy named… The Dude. Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski doesn’t want any drama in his life… heck, he can’t even be bothered with a job. But, in a case of mistaken identity, a couple of thugs break into his place and steal his rug (you gotta understand, that rug really tied the room together). Now, The Dude must embark on a quest with his crazy friends to make things right and get that rug back! Starring Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, John Goodman, John Turturro, and Steve Buscemi, The Big Lebowski has become a cultural phenomenon.
The Big Lebowski, beloved for its eccentric characters, unique dialogue, and eclectic soundtrack, is loosely based on the work of Raymond Chandler, which Joel Coen admired for the way it “moves episodically, and deals with the characters trying to unravel a mystery, as well as having a hopelessly complex plot that’s ultimately unimportant.” The film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2014 for its cultural significance.

Apr 14 Paramount Presents: Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo |
Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, the world’s foremost all-male comic ballet company, brings its internationally beloved troupe of dancers to Charlottesville as part of its landmark 50th anniversary season featuring gems from across the company’s groundbreaking repertoire. Founded in New York City in 1974, the company, affectionately known as the Trocks, has grown from its roots in late-late shows in off-off Broadway lofts to a global touring sensation, performing from Tokyo to Toronto and everywhere in between. The company dances en travesti with razor-sharp wit and breathtaking pointe work, performing polished parodies of works that span the classical ballet canon. Revered by ballet aficionados as well as by those who don’t know a plié from a jeté, the Trocks are “a guaranteed hoot for people who know nothing of ballet and an absolute must for those who think they know the originals.” (Sydney Star Observer). |

Apr 18 12th Annual Tom Tom Festival Presents: A Bridge to Life Documentary Screening |
This film screening is a fundraiser for the Bridge Ministry, as well as the distribution of the film to a larger audience. Tickets are offered on a sliding-scale basis (Suggested $15.00 – $35.00).
From celebrated director Chris Farina comes a documentary about the power of overcoming hardship, building community, and remaining resilient. A Bridge to Life is a portrait of an organization that for years has been working to change and save the lives of men dealing with life-threatening addiction issues. The men receive intensive job-training skills along with psychological and spiritual mentoring to give them a chance to return to society as successful community and family members.
Interwoven throughout this film is the inspiring story of William Washington, the founder and Executive Director of the Bridge Ministry. Having suffered serious trauma as a child, this led to him becoming a homeless teenager on the streets of Charlottesville, Virginia, as both a user and seller of deadly drugs. He was incarcerated more than once, and while eventually facing a long-term prison sentence, he was given a chance by a compassionate judge to enter a program that positively altered his life. Uplifted by this experience, he dedicated his own life to helping others who faced the same troubled path that he had been on. This led to his creation of the Bridge Ministry, in 1996, which is a much better alternative than incarceration to deal with our country’s serious crisis of drug addiction.
Following the film, a discussion and Q&A will occur with William Washington and individuals who have been impacted by the ministry.

Apr 24 Paramount On Screen: EXHIBITION ON SCREEN™ – John Singer Sargent: Fashion & Swagger |
Directed by David Bickerstaff
Running Time: 90 minutes
John Singer Sargent is known as the greatest portrait artist of his era. What made his ‘swagger’ portraits remarkable was his power over his sitters, what they wore, and how they were presented to the audience. Through interviews with curators, contemporary fashionistas, and style influencers, Exhibition on Screen™’s film will examine how Sargent’s unique practice has influenced modern art, culture, and fashion.
Filmed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Tate Britain, London, the exhibition reveals Sargent’s power to express distinctive personalities, power dynamics and gender identities during this fascinating period of cultural reinvention. Alongside 50 paintings by Sargent sit stunning items of clothing and accessories worn by his subjects, drawing the audience into the artist’s studio.
Sargent’s sitters were often wealthy, their clothes costly, but what happens when you turn yourself over to the hands of a great artist? The manufacture of public identity is as controversial and contested today as it was at the turn of the 20th century, but somehow Sargent’s work transcends the social noise and captures an alluring truth with each brush stroke.

Apr 26 Paramount Presents: Rodrigo y Gabriela |
Grammy Award-winning duo Rodrigo y Gabriela grew up on an eclectic mix of classic rock, heavy metal, and flamenco, a rare alchemy of influences that still informs their work today. Not long after the dissolution of their first band, the two musicians set off with their acoustic guitars and ended up in Ireland, where they soon ran out of money and began busking on Dublin’s Grafton Street — a turn of events that led to their crossing paths with Irish singer/songwriter Damien Rice, who then asked them to open for him at an early headline show. As they developed their distinct breed of guitar music, Rodrigo y Gabriela quickly gained recognition for their extraordinary live shows and made their full-length debut with 2002’s re-Foc. Along with turning out eight additional acclaimed and kaleidoscopic albums over the years, including Area 52 (a 2012 effort made with a Cuban orchestra), 9 Dead Alive (a 2014 release that spotlighted their more rock-leaning sensibilities,) and the 2020 Grammy-winning Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, Mettavolution, the duo has cemented their status as a globally-renowned live act. Among their many successes: performing at The White House for the President and First Lady of Mexico at a 2010 event hosted by Barack Obama; headlining the Jazz World stage at Glastonbury; selling out major venues like the Hollywood Bowl, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, London’s Royal Albert Hall, Radio City Music Hall, and the Sydney Opera House; and performing to massive crowds in such far-flung cities as Tokyo and Paris. 2023 sees the release of their most ambitious project yet, the Advaita Vedanta inspired In Between Thoughts…A New World, which features their signature dual guitar attack augmented by a full orchestra, and a corresponding world tour. |

Apr 27 Met Live in HD: La Rondine |
Puccini’s bittersweet love story makes a rare Met appearance, with soprano Angel Blue starring as the French courtesan Magda, opposite tenor Jonathan Tetelman in his highly anticipated company debut as Ruggero, an idealistic young man who offers her an alternative to her life of excess. Maestro Speranza Scappucci conducts Nicolas Joël’s Art Deco–inspired staging, which transports audiences from the heart of Parisian nightlife to a dreamy vision of the French Riviera. In their Met debuts, soprano Emily Pogorelc and tenor Bekhzod Davronov complete the sterling cast as Lisette and Prunier. |

May 5 Exceptional Artists Presents: Three Dog Night |
Legendary band Three Dog Night, now in its fifth decade, claims some of the most astonishing statistics in popular music. In the years 1969 through 1974, no other group achieved more top 10 hits, moved more records, or sold more concert tickets than Three Dog Night.
Three Dog Night hits weave through the fabric of pop culture today, whether on the radio where they are heard day in and day out, in TV commercials, or in major motion pictures — songs like “Mama Told Me (Not To Come),” “Joy to the World,” “Black and White,” “Shambala,” and “One” serve to heighten our emotions and crystallize Three Dog Night’s continuing popularity.
Boasting chart and sales records that remain virtually unmatched in popular music, Three Dog Night had 21 consecutive Top 40 hits, including three #1 singles, eleven Top 10’s, eighteen straight Top 20’s, seven million-selling singles, and twelve straight RIAA Certified Gold LPs. The hits appeared on best selling charts in all genres (pop, rock, and country). Its records continue to sell around the world, reaching beyond the borders of the U.S. into Japan, Canada, Holland, England, Germany, Spain, and elsewhere. Tens of millions of Three Dog Night records have been sold through the years.
Created in 1968 by Danny Hutton, Three Dog Night maintains an aggressive, year-round touring schedule of over 90 dates a year, performing their hit-filled concerts for multi-generational audiences. The band’s now-famous name refers to native Australian hunters in the outback who huddled with their dogs for warmth on cold nights; the coldest being a “three dog night.”
Three Dog Night demonstrates its eclectic song choices once again with new material being recorded for an upcoming album release. One of the new tracks, “Prayer of the Children,” was discovered by Hutton who created an a cappella arrangement, so that for the first time in the history of Three Dog Night, the vocals of all six members of the band are featured. The song is currently part of their live concert set and quickly becoming an audience favorite.
Marking over 50 years on the road, Three Dog Night continues to grow its fan base by keeping up a full schedule of concerts at theaters, performing arts centers, fairs, festivals, corporate events, and casinos. Since 1986, the band has performed nearly 3,000 shows, including two Super Bowls.

Jun 4 Paramount Presents: An Evening with Hilary Hahn and Andreas Haefliger |
Program:
BRAHMS: Violin Sonata No. 1 in G major, Op. 78
BRAHMS: Violin Sonata No. 2 in A major, Op. 100
BRAHMS: Violin Sonata No. 3 in D minor, Op. 108
Hilary Hahn
Three-time Grammy Award-winning violinist Hilary Hahn melds expressive musicality and technical expertise with a repertoire guided by artistic curiosity. Hahn is a prolific recording artist and commissioner of new works; her 23 feature recordings have received every critical prize. She is in her third season as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s first-ever Artist-in-Residence, and is Artist-in-Residence at the New York Philharmonic, Visiting Artist at The Juilliard School, and Curating Artist of the Dortmund Festival.
This season, Hahn performs concertos by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Korngold, and Ginastera, as well as Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy. Hahn also gives several small-ensemble performances, including three solo recitals, recitals with Iveta Apkalna and Seth Parker Woods, and chamber concerts in Dortmund and Chicago.
Hahn related to her fans naturally from the start of her career. She has committed to signings after nearly every concert and maintains a collection of fan-art received over the past 25 years. Hahn’s “Bring Your Own Baby” concerts create a welcoming environment for parents of infants to share their enjoyment of classical music with their children. Her social media initiative #100daysofpractice has transformed practice into a community-building celebration of artistic development, with nearly one million posts from fellow performers and students.
Hahn is a prolific recording artist whose feature albums on Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, and Sony have all opened in the top ten of the Billboard charts; three have won Grammys. Her most recent, a recording of Ysaÿe’s six sonatas for solo violin, celebrates her artistic lineage. She is the recipient of numerous awards; most recently, she was named Musical America’s 2023 Artist of the Year, delivered the keynote speech of the Women in Classical Music Symposium, and received the 2021 Herbert von Karajan Award and the Glasshütte Original Music Festival Award, which she donated to music education nonprofit Project 440.
Andreas Haefliger
Andreas Haefliger comes from a rich tradition of music-making and is acclaimed for his sensitivity, musical insights, and transcendent pianism. Known for his innovative programming, he brings an all-encompassing passion and humanity to his concert appearances and recordings. At an early age he was surrounded by intense vocal artistry, thereby acquiring the beginnings of what would become a highly individual vocal piano sound and a sense of natural lyricism in his music making. Having finished his studies at the Juilliard School, Haefliger soon thereafter performed with the major American and European orchestras.
A superb recitalist, Haefliger has appeared many times at prestigious venues such as the Vienna Konzerthaus, Wigmore Hall, and at the Lucerne and Edinburgh Festivals. A uniquely insightful interpreter of Beethoven, Haefliger has made it his life’s work to perform all the sonatas live and on disc alongside works by other composers in his illuminating Perspectives series, first on Avie (with whom he also recorded flute sonatas with his wife Marina Piccinini) and latterly on BIS.
Haefliger began his recording career with Sony Classical, later appearing on Decca with the Takács Quartet and also Matthias Goerne, with whom he won the Preis Der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik for Schubert’s Goethe Songs. His latest releases on BIS include Beethoven op.31 sonatas, and concerti by Ravel, Bartok, and Dieter Ammann (written specially for him) with the Helsinki Philharmonic, and Susanna Malkki.
In 2024, he and his wife will present the first edition of the Zauberklang Festival, inviting special guests such as Hilary Hahn and Ian Bostridge to perform in intimate surroundings high in the Swiss Alps.

Jun 5 Paramount On Screen: EXHIBITION ON SCREEN™ – My National Gallery, London |
Directed by Phil Grabsky and Ali Ray
Running Times: 90 minutes
The National Gallery of London is one of the world’s greatest art galleries. It is full of masterpieces, an endless resource of history, an endless source of stories. But whose stories are told? Which art has the most impact and on whom? The power of great art lies in its ability to communicate with anyone, no matter their art historical knowledge, their background, their beliefs.
This film gives voice to those who work at the gallery – from cleaner to curator, security guard to director – who identify the one artwork that means the most to them and why. An assortment of people from all walks of life who have a strong connection to the gallery make surprising choices of both well-known and lesser-known artworks. Finally, some well-known celebrities explain what they head for when they visit the gallery.
These stories are used as a lens through which to explore the 200-year history of the National Gallery and what the future may hold for this spectacular space.

THE ELIXIR OF LOVE
Composed by Gaetano Donizetti
Libretto by Felice Romani
Based on Eugène Scribe’s libretto for Daniel Auber’s Le philtre (1831)

A rousing, fun, and romantic tale filled with beautiful melodies, joyous choruses, and lush vineyard vistas. Sung in Italian with English subtitles.
The Elixir of Love is made possible by Charlottesville Opera’s Presenting Sponsor: The Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation. Additional support by Tessa Gowan Ader, whose gifts make possible the Ader Emerging Artist Program, training the next generation of great voices.
