May 5    Exceptional Artists Presents: Three Dog Night

Legendary band Three Dog Night, now in its fifth decade, claims some of the most astonishing statistics in popular music. In the years 1969 through 1974, no other group achieved more top 10 hits, moved more records, or sold more concert tickets than Three Dog Night.

Three Dog Night hits weave through the fabric of pop culture today, whether on the radio where they are heard day in and day out, in TV commercials, or in major motion pictures — songs like “Mama Told Me (Not To Come),” “Joy to the World,” “Black and White,” “Shambala,” and “One” serve to heighten our emotions and crystallize Three Dog Night’s continuing popularity.

Boasting chart and sales records that remain virtually unmatched in popular music, Three Dog Night had 21 consecutive Top 40 hits, including three #1 singles, eleven Top 10’s, eighteen straight Top 20’s, seven million-selling singles, and twelve straight RIAA Certified Gold LPs. The hits appeared on best selling charts in all genres (pop, rock, and country). Its records continue to sell around the world, reaching beyond the borders of the U.S. into Japan, Canada, Holland, England, Germany, Spain, and elsewhere. Tens of millions of Three Dog Night records have been sold through the years.

Created in 1968 by Danny Hutton, Three Dog Night maintains an aggressive, year-round touring schedule of over 90 dates a year, performing their hit-filled concerts for multi-generational audiences. The band’s now-famous name refers to native Australian hunters in the outback who huddled with their dogs for warmth on cold nights; the coldest being a “three dog night.”

Three Dog Night demonstrates its eclectic song choices once again with new material being recorded for an upcoming album release. One of the new tracks, “Prayer of the Children,” was discovered by Hutton who created an a cappella arrangement, so that for the first time in the history of Three Dog Night, the vocals of all six members of the band are featured. The song is currently part of their live concert set and quickly becoming an audience favorite.

Marking over 50 years on the road, Three Dog Night continues to grow its fan base by keeping up a full schedule of concerts at theaters, performing arts centers, fairs, festivals, corporate events, and casinos. Since 1986, the band has performed nearly 3,000 shows, including two Super Bowls.

Youth After School program will join in the Broadway celebration.

DMR Adventures is thrilled to announce that international director, choreographer, and Broadway performer Matthew Steffens will join the company of Broadway at The Paramount as Emcee and Guest Artist. He was the original director of Broadway at The Paramount for several years when it was a part of DMR’s summer programming. Steffens states, “I can’t wait to be back with DMR Adventures for Broadway at The Paramount. Last summer, when I was directing Cabaret at Virginia Theatre Festival, I was reminded of the amazing talent that is in Charlottesville. A lot has changed in the world since I directed the 2017 version when this was a summer intensive, but one thing has remained the same. DMR Adventures continues to provide opportunities to showcase the best and brightest talent in Charlottesville. I’m excited to work with that talent to create a spectacular show that will take our audience on a journey. Whether it’s on Broadway in NYC to Broadway at The Paramount, I love working with our next generation of artists!”

Jun 4    Paramount Presents: An Evening with Hilary Hahn and Andreas Haefliger

Program:

BRAHMS: Violin Sonata No. 1 in G major, Op. 78
BRAHMS: Violin Sonata No. 2 in A major, Op. 100
BRAHMS: Violin Sonata No. 3 in D minor, Op. 108

Hilary Hahn

Three-time Grammy Award-winning violinist Hilary Hahn melds expressive musicality and technical expertise with a repertoire guided by artistic curiosity. Hahn is a prolific recording artist and commissioner of new works; her 23 feature recordings have received every critical prize. She is in her third season as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s first-ever Artist-in-Residence, and is Artist-in-Residence at the New York Philharmonic, Visiting Artist at The Juilliard School, and Curating Artist of the Dortmund Festival.

This season, Hahn performs concertos by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Korngold, and Ginastera, as well as Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy. Hahn also gives several small-ensemble performances, including three solo recitals, recitals with Iveta Apkalna and Seth Parker Woods, and chamber concerts in Dortmund and Chicago.

Hahn related to her fans naturally from the start of her career. She has committed to signings after nearly every concert and maintains a collection of fan-art received over the past 25 years. Hahn’s “Bring Your Own Baby” concerts create a welcoming environment for parents of infants to share their enjoyment of classical music with their children. Her social media initiative #100daysofpractice has transformed practice into a community-building celebration of artistic development, with nearly one million posts from fellow performers and students.

Hahn is a prolific recording artist whose feature albums on Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, and Sony have all opened in the top ten of the Billboard charts; three have won Grammys. Her most recent, a recording of Ysaÿe’s six sonatas for solo violin, celebrates her artistic lineage. She is the recipient of numerous awards; most recently, she was named Musical America’s 2023 Artist of the Year, delivered the keynote speech of the Women in Classical Music Symposium, and received the 2021 Herbert von Karajan Award and the Glasshütte Original Music Festival Award, which she donated to music education nonprofit Project 440.

Andreas Haefliger

Andreas Haefliger comes from a rich tradition of music-making and is acclaimed for his sensitivity, musical insights, and transcendent pianism. Known for his innovative programming, he brings an all-encompassing passion and humanity to his concert appearances and recordings. At an early age he was surrounded by intense vocal artistry, thereby acquiring the beginnings of what would become a highly individual vocal piano sound and a sense of natural lyricism in his music making. Having finished his studies at the Juilliard School, Haefliger soon thereafter performed with the major American and European orchestras.

A superb recitalist, Haefliger has appeared many times at prestigious venues such as the Vienna Konzerthaus, Wigmore Hall, and at the Lucerne and Edinburgh Festivals. A uniquely insightful interpreter of Beethoven, Haefliger has made it his life’s work to perform all the sonatas live and on disc alongside works by other composers in his illuminating Perspectives series, first on Avie (with whom he also recorded flute sonatas with his wife Marina Piccinini) and latterly on BIS.

Haefliger began his recording career with Sony Classical, later appearing on Decca with the Takács Quartet and also Matthias Goerne, with whom he won the Preis Der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik for Schubert’s Goethe Songs. His latest releases on BIS include Beethoven op.31 sonatas, and concerti by Ravel, Bartok, and Dieter Ammann (written specially for him) with the Helsinki Philharmonic, and Susanna Malkki.

In 2024, he and his wife will present the first edition of the Zauberklang Festival, inviting special guests such as Hilary Hahn and Ian Bostridge to perform in intimate surroundings high in the Swiss Alps.

Jun 5    Paramount On Screen: EXHIBITION ON SCREEN™ – My National Gallery, London

Directed by Phil Grabsky and Ali Ray
Running Times: 90 minutes

The National Gallery of London is one of the world’s greatest art galleries. It is full of masterpieces, an endless resource of history, an endless source of stories. But whose stories are told?  Which art has the most impact and on whom? The power of great art lies in its ability to communicate with anyone, no matter their art historical knowledge, their background, their beliefs.

This film gives voice to those who work at the gallery – from cleaner to curator, security guard to director – who identify the one artwork that means the most to them and why. An assortment of people from all walks of life who have a strong connection to the gallery make surprising choices of both well-known and lesser-known artworks. Finally, some well-known celebrities explain what they head for when they visit the gallery.

These stories are used as a lens through which to explore the 200-year history of the National Gallery and what the future may hold for this spectacular space.

Oct 20    Live Nation Presents: Brian Regan

Critics, fans, and fellow comedians agree: Brian Regan is one of the most respected comedians in the country with Vanity Fair calling Brian, “The funniest stand-up alive,” and Entertainment Weekly calling him, “Your favorite comedian’s favorite comedian.” Having built his 30-plus year career on the strength of his material alone, Brian’s non-stop theater tour continuously fills the most beautiful venues across North America, visiting close to 100 cities each year.

Brian co-stars in three seasons of Peter Farrelly’s TV series, Loudermilk, which moved to Netflix on January 1, 2024, ranking in the Top 10 TV Shows on Netflix for over a month. Farrelly personally cast Brian in the series alongside Ron Livingston, Anja Savcic, Will Sasso, and Mat Fraser. Brian received praise for his portrayal of “Mugsy,” a recovering addict who is estranged from his family. The series’ first two seasons aired on AT&T’s Audience Network before moving to Amazon Prime to premiere the third season.

On February 23, 2021, Brian premiered his second Netflix stand-up special, Brian Regan: On The Rocks, which was shot at Tuachan Center for the Arts, an outdoor amphitheater in Utah. Brian’s first Netflix special, Brian Regan: Nunchucks And Flamethrowers, premiered to rave reviews on November 21, 2017, and is also available as a vinyl album.

A regular on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Brian is the rare guest who the show invites on for two segments: a performance segment and a segment on the couch to chat with Jimmy. Previously, Brian was a regular guest on The Late Show with David Letterman, making 28 appearances on the CBS show.

Brian made a scene-stealing cameo in Chris Rock’s film, Top Five, and he is a guest on two episodes of Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, which is now streaming on Netflix.

Brian has eight hour-long comedy releases:
Brian Regan: On The Rocks (2021) – Premiered on Netflix on February 23, 2021

Oct 26    Starr Hill Presents: Little Feat: Can’t Be Satisfied Tour

With Special Guest Duane Betts & Palmetto Motel

The members of Little Feat emerged from the pandemic with their sense of humor, chops, and collective joy in playing intact. Over the past three years, they’ve focused tours on their epic live album Waiting for Columbus and re-issues of their second through fourth albums (Sailin’ ShoesDixie Chicken, and Feats Don’t Fail Me Now). Audience response has been rapturous.

The band builds on a deep, over 50-year history. Little Feat used a combination of elite musicianship and brilliant, idiosyncratic songwriting to create a repertoire that transcends all boundaries. California rock, funk, folk, jazz, country, and rockabilly mixed with New Orleans swamp boogie led to a powerful sound that has kept the audience dancing for decades.

Their groove – in songs like “Dixie Chicken,” “Spanish Moon,” “Fat Man in the Bathtub,” and “Feats Don’t Fail Me Now” – was so infectious it allowed them to endure and press on even when losing their founder, Lowell George, and founding drummer, Richie Hayward. They’re in top form now with Scott Sharrard on lead/vox and Tony Leone on drums/vox, and with founder Bill Payne on keys/vox, Fred Tackett on guitars/vox, Kenny Gradney on bass, and Sam Clayton on percussion/vox.

Now it’s time for something new. Their creativity has been renewed, and 2024 will see the release of the brand-new Sam’s Place, in which Feat backs their linchpin conga player, Sam Clayton, on vocals. The album features a new song, “Milk Man,” by Sam, Scott, and Fred. There’s a live version of “Got My Mojo Working.” Sam and Bonnie Raitt duet on Muddy’s “Long Distance Call.”

Sam’s Place scratches a deep itch. Sam added, “I’m very happy because I was never expecting anything like that. I mean, I have wanted to, but I just wasn’t expecting it to come to the fruition. It was a long wait, but it’s satisfying.”
